Bricks

Bricks :-

Types of bricks:-

a) based on material use
1) sun- dried or unburnt  clay bricks
2) burnt clay bricks
  1. first class bricks
  2. second class bricks
  3. third class bricks
  4. fourth class bricks
3) fly ash bricks
4) concrete bricks
5) engineering bricks
6) sand lime or calcium silicate bricks

b) based on size
1) modular bricks
2) non- modular bricks

Properties of bricks:-

physical properties:-

  • size, shape, color and density of bricks.

    size of bricks :-

  • 1) modular bricks:-
  • standard size of modular bricks are :- 190*90*90 mm ( without mortar )
  • nominal size of modular bricks bricks :- 200*100*100 mm  (consider mortar size of 10 mm)

2)non modular bricks:-

  •  standard size :- 230*110*70 mm  or          (without mortar)
  •                            230*110*30 mm
  • nominal size :- 240*120*80 mm or              (consider mortar size)
  •                          240*120*40 mm

shape , color and density of bricks :-

  • shape of an ideal brick is rectangular  and for special purpose shape of bricks are different as per requirement.
  • color of brick is normally red.it vary dark red to light red. if brick color is very dark red it indicate over burnt brick and it color is yellow then brick is under burning.
  • density of brick is vary from 1600 kg/cubic meter to 1900 kg/cubic meter.

mechanical brick properties:-

1) compressive strength of bricks:-   it vary from 35 to 200 kg/ cm square.
2) Flexural strength  of bricks:-  is not <10 kg/ cm square.

Bricks component :-

 1) header
bricks width face or small dimension (90*90) face called header of bricks.
 2) stretcher
in bricks 190* 90 mm or length and height face called stretcher of bricks.

 3) frog
frog are present in top side of brick . it is present for more grip or more strength of brick wall.

calculating number of brick in any wall:-

step 1:- calculating volume of one brick
step 2:- calculating volume of given wall
step 3:-  number of brick = total wall volume/ one brick volume

ex.  constuction of 1*2*0.1  m wall find required bricks.
step 1:- calculating volume of one brick
                    brick dimension 190*90*90 mm
                 with mortar 200*100*100 mm
                  so 0.2*0.1*0.1 m.
                   V= (0.2*0.1*0.1) =0.002 meter cube.
step 2 :- calculating volume of one brick
                V=( 1*2*0.1)= 0.2 meter cube
step 3:-  number of brick = total wall volume/ one brick volume
                  no. of brick =0.2/0.002=100 bricks.

calculating weight of bricks:-

density= mass/volume
therefore mass=density*volume
    brick density=  1600 kg/meter cube
    brick volume= (190*90*90)mm=(0.19*0.09*0.09)m=0.001539 meter cube
weight of brick = 1600*0.001539=2.4624 kg
